The Birth of the Modern Navy

The Italian Navy owes its birth to the need to protect the newly-founded Italian state, which was a small and weak piece of territory ceded by the Holy Roman Empire. In 1539, Henry VIII of England, victorious in battle during the so-called “Babylonian Captivity of Mary, Queen of Scots” and a pope who had blessed her marriage to the Dauphin of France, had ordained that her son be crowned king of England. If you’re going to crown a person king, and have them be hundreds of miles away from where you are ruling, you’re going to have to protect them.
The answer? Build a strong navy capable of protecting your newly created country. The capital city of the new nation was Venice, founded in the late 13th century and the second most important trading outpost of Europe by the late 15th century. Venice had already been the naval power of the Adriatic Sea, which has, in the intervening 400 years, gained over 100,000 square miles of territory and about 15,000 square miles of coastline, making its net gain equal to the combined size of the Netherlands and France. Yet it had been left unprotected by the Holy Roman Empire. The Venetians, however, understood the importance of sea power.
