# Photoshop Layers and Adjustments Layers

Photoshop supports two ways to manipulate an image: a layer-based system and an adjustment layer system. Both require you to work on individual layers. In this tutorial, we’ll work with layers and their abilities to edit the image separately. In a later tutorial, we’ll cover adjustment layers.

While Photoshop has a _layers palette,_ a separate palette that enables you to edit individual layers and apply individual adjustments to them, it’s best to work with layers and the Photoshop toolbox, rather than a palette, to edit your image.

It’s worth pointing out that Photoshop has another name for _Layers palettes_ : _layer windows_. Whatever you call them, you use them to create and edit layers; you’ll see how they work in this tutorial.

## Creating a New Image Using a New Layer

As you learned in the preceding _Layers_ section, you can create new layers by using the New Layer (Layer⇒New Layer) command. When you do, Photoshop creates a new layer based on whatever background color you have set in your New Layer dialog box (shown in Figure 3-5).

You can change the name of a new layer by clicking the text box at the bottom of the dialog box and typing a new name. The background color you choose for your new layer can be modified in several ways:

* **Choose from a collection of predefined colors:** You can use a color in the Color Picker palette (Ctrl+K) to select a color or use the color swatches shown in Figure 3-5.

* **Use a color’s hex value:** You can use the value of a color’s hex code to create a new layer with that color.

* **Use a color from the current color palette, as shown in** **Figure** **3-5** **:** Click the color swatches to open the Color Picker palette and then

One of the most popular and widely used of all graphic editing software programs, Photoshop is a professional photo editing program that focuses on creating photorealistic images. It was released in 1987 by Adobe and was initially developed for the Apple Macintosh computer.

What Is Photoshop Elements?

Adobe Photoshop Elements is an alternative to traditional Photoshop. It is a graphics editor for photographers, image editors and hobbyists. It contains most of the features of the professional version but with fewer features and a simpler user interface.

However, the tools, features and basic functions are very similar to those found in the original Photoshop. Photoshop Elements also has some additional enhancements over Photoshop, such as a zoom feature and faster brushes.

It is designed for people who are using Photoshop for the first time. It can be used for basic photo editing tasks, where users can selectively edit specific elements in a photo to improve the appearance of the image. It can also be used to create high-quality home photos and graphics.

Adobe Photoshop Elements vs. Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop Elements lacks some of the more advanced features found in the original version. It is designed to provide a more basic, beginner-friendly experience.

The following sections will highlight some of the differences between Adobe Photoshop Elements and Photoshop.

Common Interface

Although the basic look and feel of the interface is similar, Photoshop Elements has been designed for beginners. It uses a simpler workflow and a different method of navigation.

Photoshop Elements has four tabs that contain various tools and features for you to use to edit your photos. For example, you can use the tools to edit photos, create new photos and add effects to photos.

(CNN) Gary Baxter, who has played his part in the Dandridge Man mystery for more than 40 years, has died. He was 65.

Baxter had been in the world since being born in January 1949 in London. He died on Monday night at the Royal London Hospital, where he had been since suffering multiple strokes in 2016.

“At times like this it is impossible to put into words just how much Gary has meant to us all,” his family said in a statement.

“The Dandridge Man has endured for 40 long years and he’s no nearer to the truth now than he was when he first stepped into the role in 1987,” they said.

The Burn Tool lets you erase parts of an image by choosing a color or range of colors and making it transparent. This is especially useful for fixing small areas of damage.
Photoshop is also a great vector tool. It lets you extract, edit, and reuse shapes so you can design textures, logos, or illustrations on a digital canvas.
The Gradient Tool lets you apply color changes across an image. This is useful for separating a color or adding variations across a subject.
The Shadow and Highlight Tools let you choose a specific area of the image. This makes it easy to add color correction or darken or lighten the image. The Shadow and Highlight tools are great for transforming an image without losing its original details.
The Gaussian Blur Tool allows you to soften the edge of an object. This makes it easy to apply blur to an image for a more blurred look.
Photoshop also comes with a color palette tool. Once you select a color you want to use across your image, the color palette tool allows you to make changes instantly to the color. This is helpful to correct colors, add shadows or highlights to the image, or try out a new color for your logo or illustration.
The Spot Healing Brush is a great way to fix minor scratches, blemishes, or tiny lines. It works by analyzing colors from adjacent areas and making the repair as seamless as possible.
The Magic Wand can be used to select a subject, or to zoom in on part of the image. The Magic Wand can be adjusted for “Auto-Select” (default) or “Select” which is good for cleaning up an image.
Photoshop can be used to draw illustrations or paint on a canvas. The Pen Tool (Skia) is one of the best ways to create vector graphics.
Photoshop comes with an extensive text tool. The Text Tool allows you to select the area in which you want to type. You can adjust the type, size and position. You can also change the text into an image, a brush, or a background. The Text Tool can also be used to clean up text.
The Magic Eraser Tool allows you to erase whole or partial areas of an image. This is useful for correcting mistakes or filling in a section of an image.
The Crop Tool lets you select a specific area and crop the rest of the image. This is useful for editing an image without losing the original context.
