Software applications based on AutoCAD work by manipulating 2D and 3D geometric models of objects and spaces. Designers and engineers use CAD software to create 2D drawings and design products such as blueprints and architectural plans for construction, as well as 3D models used in computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) and in products such as rapid prototyping. CAD models can include tables, grids, reference points, annotations, and direct dimensions. CAD software applications have become the standard tool for designers and engineers who use paper to create design layouts. The drawings may be annotated with specific information, such as notes and comments. At times, CAD work is done digitally in a separate piece of software, such as the web-based Autodesk BIM 360 cloud platform. The use of CAD applications has evolved to include the use of computer-aided design software for electronic design automation.

History

AutoCAD was initially developed by Scott Jehl, a statistician, and Jeffrey Katz, an electrical engineer at the University of Utah, and their concept of a unified environment for both 2D and 3D design was then developed in 1978 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as the McGRAW-HILL Graphics Development System. While working at MIT they produced the first AutoCAD prototype. The program was never released commercially because the program was too difficult to use.

When people such as Frank Manderson, a former manager of the Boston Computer Science Center, were trying to introduce computer graphics in the early 1980s, they heard about the computer graphics system at MIT. He was interested in it and the MIT staff members agreed to try to get the program released to industry.

The software was sold to the VME Software Company, a small Massachusetts company, in 1982 for $2.5 million, just before AutoCAD was released to the public.

In the early 1980s the use of the graphics terminal increased, but the first desktop AutoCAD was not released until December 1982. AutoCAD was initially available on five different platforms. The first four were MacIntosh, IBM PC, VAX, and the GE Supercomputer. The fifth was the classic-style TRS-80 Model 3 that was a third-generation successor to the TRS-80 Model 2.

Objects
Objects are used to manipulate data within Autodesk® AutoCAD® software. Objects have various properties, such as properties for things like size, texture and color. The coordinates of an object are stored on a layer. The layer can be specific to the objects that are on that layer, meaning that it is only available to those objects on that layer. A layer can contain multiple views, allowing the user to see different aspects of the objects on that layer.

Scenes

A scene in Autodesk® AutoCAD® software consists of objects. A scene can be made up of a single object, several objects, or multiple objects and objects of different layers. A scene is placed at the beginning of the drawing and does not change location as the drawing is being edited, unlike layers and views. The position of the objects in a scene, and in the drawing in general is defined by objects called reference points. The reference points are independent of the points that define the shape of the object and are used to indicate the position of the object in the scene and in the drawing. If you try to move an object in the scene it will not move, but if you move the object in the drawing it will move in the scene. Scenes are most often used to place objects in the drawing, but are also used to create an animation.

Curves and NURBS

A curve is a curve that can be used to define the surface of an object. A single curve is referred to as an implicit curve and the drawing can contain multiple curves, each of which defines a different part of the surface. In the drawing the individual curves are hidden and only the final curve is visible and editable. Curves can also be used in combination with each other to create a complex shape. The curve that is made up of the final curve and the other curves that are used to form the shape is known as an implicit curve.

A curve is defined as a series of points connected to each other with a curve. The point itself is defined by two numbers called the X coordinate and the Y coordinate. The points can be specified in one of two ways: by numerical values or by a label that can be used by the user to describe the point, for example “cylinder”. AutoCAD allows the use of curves for three purposes: to define the shape of the object, to give the object a smooth surface and to define the movement of the object. The most commonly used curve

When I joined the Giants in March, a friend sent me a text asking if I’d ever heard of a guy named Kevin Sheehan.

“No,” I replied.

“Good,” my friend replied. “I’m about to introduce you to a guy named Kevin Sheehan.”

He explained that Sheehan had been a Giants kicker for a few years, that he’d had a monster 2011 season, and that it looked like he was going to be the Giants’ kicker for 2012. That was good enough for me. I just didn’t see how Sheehan could be better than Graham Gano, who’d been kicking great for the Redskins.

What Sheehan has done is even better than Gano’s 2011 season. Gano missed four of the Giants’ first six field goal tries, and missed one of the four he made. Sheehan has made all 10 of his field goal tries. Gano’s made 82 of his 86 extra point tries, and Sheehan has missed two of eight. (He’s made all eight of his attempts.) Gano’s made 96 percent of his extra point tries, Sheehan 96 percent. And Gano’s had a serious injury problem the past few years.

If Gano was on the Jets, I’d feel a little better about Sheehan, because I’d expect his kickoffs to be much better. As it is, Sheehan’s average return is 23.3 yards, while Gano’s is 21.5. That’s a huge difference.

Sheehan is hitting almost 70 percent of his extra point attempts. That’s a lot better than Gano, who’s hitting about 65 percent of his attempts. (And that means Gano’s misses on the kickoffs and extra points would cost the Giants some points.)
