What is AutoCAD for?
AutoCAD is a commercial CAD/drafting software application. Like many CAD and drafting applications, AutoCAD is used for engineering work, such as the creation of blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings. It is the most commonly used drafting and engineering tool in the world. The application is available as a desktop app running on computers with internal graphics controllers, as a mobile app, and as a web application.
Supported Platforms
The primary operating systems that AutoCAD is available for include Windows, macOS, and Linux. AutoCAD also works on iOS and Android mobile devices.
What is it Used For?
AutoCAD is used by architects, engineers, drafters, contractors, general contractors, and building inspectors. Engineers use AutoCAD to create architectural and mechanical drawings, to plan construction of buildings and bridges, and for technical documentation in construction. Architects, engineers, and contractors use AutoCAD to create technical drawings and documents that include information about a project’s blueprint and structure. Building inspectors use AutoCAD to create documents that describe a building’s construction and construction-related defects, such as cracks in building walls.
AutoCAD Drawings
The architectural and engineering drawings made with AutoCAD, commonly referred to as “AutoCAD drawings,” are created in a drawing area.
In the drawing area, users create geometric shapes and text objects, place them on a drawing canvas, move them, rotate them, resize them, and group them. Users can print a single drawing or an entire file.
Users create basic architectural and engineering drawings with various tools. A drawing includes one or more layers, each of which is a collection of objects and text. Layers can be grouped together to create more complex drawings.
Useful Features
AutoCAD has numerous useful features that help users create accurate drawings.
Parts of a Drawing
An AutoCAD drawing is made up of one or more parts. Each part contains one or more layers. Each layer includes geometric shapes and text objects, such as dimension symbols and text.
Layers
A layer is a collection of geometric shapes and text objects that can be used to create a drawing. A drawing is typically made up of multiple layers.
For more information about layers and the layers in a drawing, see Layer Operations.

On 30 August 2007, Autodesk released the.NET API for AutoCAD for developers to integrate AutoCAD drawing functionality into their own software and web applications. In September 2007, Autodesk launched a public beta program for the.NET API. The.NET API is available as part of the 2010 release, and was released for all AutoCAD 2011 users on the first day of release, in February 2011. On 30 August 2007, Autodesk released the Visual LISP API, which provides a high-level interface for developers to customize AutoCAD through Visual LISP.
The following features are currently supported in the.NET API for AutoCAD:
