## **The Levels Adjustment**
Most simple images have just a single bright, dark, or mid-tone value. When you make changes to the picture, you only change the value of those pixels. If a pixel has a value of 255, you can’t change it to any other value; it stays as 255. Similarly, any pixel with a value of 0 cannot be changed to any other value.
But many images require adjustment. For example, there may be two dark areas of a photo, and you’d like to set the middle, or mid-tone value of the image to be more or less as the middle between the darker and lighter areas. There may be a bright area in the center of the image, and you’d like to raise the brightness of the entire area. There may be a color in the image with too little saturation—you want to increase the color saturation. You may have a color that is too bright and not enough saturation. The following steps show you how to make these edits with a Levels adjustment layer.

To open Levels in Photoshop, choose Layer Levels (Figure 4-3, image _d_ ). After choosing Layer Levels, create a new layer and choose Layer Levels to open the Levels dialog.
