If you are serious about making money with your photos and have come from one of the millions of people who use a camera each day, take a class or at least get help from your local technical school. You can get training at a local technical school (described in Chapter 20), or join a specialized school. One of the best places to learn Photoshop is at the Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) Training Institute. This nonprofit group offers classes for photographers and others to teach them how to edit images using Photoshop. DICOM actually invented the DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) technology. Its classes are hosted online for just about any age group. DICOM will teach you how to use the essential functions of Photoshop, as well as how to use them to create advanced images. You can order training courses at the DICOM website: `www.dicom.com`.

To understand Photoshop, you need to know two things: how to shoot pictures with your camera and how to edit them on your computer. You can read in Chapter 5 about your basic equipment, and in Chapter 9 about your camera. In this chapter, I show you how to use Photoshop. I begin with opening and closing an image (see the next section for more on opening and saving), and then I show you the basics of how to edit an image in Photoshop. You find out how to crop, rotate, add shadows, increase or decrease contrast, adjust colors, create a paper clip from scratch, and so much more.

Mastering Your Photoshop Basics

You can click one of Photoshop’s many Toolbars as you are working on a file. Choose Photoshop⇒Preferences to open the Preferences dialog box. Click the down arrow next to the Toolbox item and choose what you want to appear on your Toolbar. To view the Toolbox, choose Window⇒Toolbox. Check out the Toolbox in Figure 9-1. (You can also press Ctrl+Q to open the Toolbox.) The sections of the Toolbox are as follows:

Edit: You find all of the tools for working in the Edit section.

Layout: You find the tools for working in the Layout section.

Menus: You find the tools for working in the Menus section.

Navigator: You find all of the tools that work in the Navigator.

Pixel: You find all of the tools for working in the Pixel section.

The most important tools of Photoshop are also the most important tools of Photoshop Elements. You’ll find them in Photoshop Elements: the most powerful selection tool, the most easy-to-use paint tool, the most effective replacement for the clone stamp, etc.

The programs is great for editing photos, even for those who don’t want to put much work into their image. Photoshop Elements will make it easy to edit your photos, making them look better than ever before. Below you will find the differences between Photoshop Elements and Photoshop. This comparison will help you to choose between the two versions.

Accessories

Image editors such as Photoshop Elements offer more accessories than Photoshop. They are not free but they are far more useful and easier to use.

A good example is the Mask tool.

In Photoshop, you can select a part of your photo and leave it unaltered. You can do that with other tools as well but it’s less effective because you have to manually delete the selected area.

You can create a mask in Photoshop Elements (on the right side) which you can then apply to any selection you make. The advantage of this tool is that you can still use the other tools in the same way as with the Photoshop version.

The biggest difference between the two programs is that in Photoshop Elements you can create a single mask or make multiple masks. With Photoshop, it is necessary to apply the mask to the selection you made.

You can also see the differences in the size of the programs. Photoshop Elements is smaller than Photoshop.

Adobe Photoshop has a free trial for one month. After that, you will have to purchase a version of Photoshop Elements or a subscription to the professional version of Photoshop.

The professional versions of Photoshop are distributed through Adobe’s Creative Cloud and Elements is distributed through Adobe’s Photoshop Cloud. The cloud storage offers 10GB of space and allows you to access files from any computer.

The professional versions of Photoshop are sold through Adobe’s website. These versions have more features than Elements but it is harder to order them.

The free trial of Elements is for 30 days. After that you can activate the software for a monthly fee.

Elements comes with a number of presets to help you make your image look better than it would have been otherwise.

At the beginning of September 2012, we launched a new web site that should address a number of user experience issues we had noticed over the years. We also launched a new “Agent Portal” application. These changes were all prompted by industry changes that have made it increasingly difficult for users to find agents who can help them with their problems, and more difficult for agents to find cases where they can make a difference. What’s more, we had heard from some readers of this blog that they were having difficulties finding agents on their favorite social networks.

Part of the problem was that we, like other businesses that serve financial advisors, live in a highly competitive world. In a world where there are more than 5,000 registered investment advisors, it is difficult to survive.

It took us nearly a year to solve these problems. Here is what we did:

That’s right. We asked our users to try a new Twitter application called @Gumtree.

It helped us get some great feedback that made it clear we should continue to use Twitter to reach our agents.

Building on the feedback, we incorporated a few new features such as a simple profile for agents, an agent link in our listing on Gumtree, a new centralized dashboard to see how our network is performing, and improvements to the Agent Portal and on our site.

Our changes have resulted in a more friendly site and better communication between our users and us. So far, we have received great feedback and the results have been very encouraging.

We are very encouraged by the success of the first of our many small changes. We are now ready to roll out another set of changes that will revolutionize user experience on the site. But before we go any further, we need feedback from you—our readers and users.

Thalassemia and homozygosity for hemoglobin E in a case of cord blood transplantation.
The present report describes a child who underwent a cord blood transplant from a sibling donor and was found to be phenotypically and genotypically normal. These findings, coupled with the observation of severe hypersplenism and a microcytosis, prompted the search for thalassemia. The boy’s red blood cells were found to be slightly microcytic, with a mean corpuscular volume of 107.9 fl. Hemoglobin analysis indicated the presence of E-beta thalassemia. A PCR analysis of genomic DNA from a cord blood sample identified the presence of an alpha-globin gene mutation (Alpha(-3.7) deletion) at the homozygous state and an E-beta thalassemia mutation at the heterozygous state. Further confirmation of a genotype characterized by the presence of a homozygous alpha-globin gene mutation and homozygosity for the E-beta thalassemia mutation was obtained after PCR amplification of the DNA extracted from the patient’s blood. This combination of events is very rare and this case calls attention to the possible association between thalassemia and microcytosis in patients receiving transplants of allogeneic or autologous cells.Q:

Saving and rewriting a Gist

Let’s say I am explaining the concept of version control by writing a little ‘to do’ app.
In the app, I want to have a ‘New Gist’ button, so a user can create a gist and post it, so that it can be re-discovered later by searching for the key that was used.
The ‘New Gist’ button will store the gist (and store the key used as part of a hidden HTML form element so that in searches, the key is still found).
