To add a layer to an image, you first must create a new image or open an existing one. For example, if you want to use a photograph of your child that you’ve taken with your digital camera to edit, you must create a new image. To create a new image, choose File⇒New. Next, browse to the folder on your computer that contains your images, and click on the image you want to use. In Figure 6-1, for example, I clicked on the photo of my daughter in the shot folder and then chose File⇒New. This opened the New Document dialog box, which enabled me to choose the size of the image.

The next step is to make sure that the image you want to work with is open — you don’t want to use an image that’s already open!

While the latest version of Photoshop may seem daunting to the new user, it is easy to learn for the experienced user. Photoshop Elements and Photoshop have similar features, and you can use the same commands in Elements to recreate them in Elements. In this article, we’ll walk through learning Photoshop Elements with a beginner’s approach. It’s just a matter of knowing your tools.

What Are the Incompatibilities Between Elements and Photoshop?

You can import images and open existing images, like Photoshop, but there are some differences. You can’t add a text layer in Photoshop Elements using text-based tools.

In Elements you also can’t create new shapes using Photoshop’s shape tool. For example, the Ellipse tool in Photoshop can create a circle, ellipse, or oval. However, in Elements you can only create circles using the Line or Freehand tool.

I am trying to use a program I wrote, and it works for Mac OS but when I try it on Windows 7 it freezes and I think it might be a memory issue. Can anyone help me figure out where the memory leak is? I have found that the other programs that use the same framework don’t freeze when I use them on a windows computer, so I think something in my program is causing the freeze.

The program uses lots of dynamic arrays to store the frequencies, and they’re created in this method:

getLength() gets the length of the array, and all the other functions are called like that.

A memory exception from a thread? That’s pretty strange. What could be triggering that? Is there a particular reason you chose to have them all be static?

Thanks for the reply, but I don’t think the memory leak is a thread issue, because I have killed the thread and the program doesn’t freeze anymore. So I don’t think the thread can be causing the problem.

The memory problems might be because Windows 7 uses 1.5 GB of heap size, where Mac OS only uses 1 GB. So I am thinking that the 1.5 GB should not be reserved for dynamic arrays but something else instead, like the arrays are currently set to (0.5*totalSize) for each frequency.
