Photoshop is the industry standard and, therefore, often features in a higher price range when it’s used by end users. However, the programs we list in this book are all priced around $50 to $100. You can’t beat the price, either.
Creating and Editing an Image
Photoshop isn’t just a program that you run. You can always open an existing image from your hard drive and make the necessary changes. However, the program is much more powerful when you start your first time using it.
The following sections give you a preview of the basic features you can use when you first start and then move to the use of the capabilities that enable more professional applications.
Getting acquainted with your workspace
After starting Photoshop, the image you have open at the left side of your screen is the active image. To go back and view the image you have saved and edit previously, simply click the Previous Back option on the top of your workspace. The image is the active image, so it will look like the image shown in Figure 2-1.
When you first use Photoshop, you’ll see different icons in the workspace. The Layers icon is at the top of the workspace by default, but it’s on the right side of the workspace when you first start Photoshop. An icon representing a red x in the bottom right corner is the standard warning sign; this symbol will appear as long as you haven’t saved a project, and it means that the image you’re working on isn’t saved. The default settings when you start Photoshop won’t save any projects, so it’s best to save a project each time. The small downward arrow is the image preview window. Clicking the down arrow at the top of the window opens the active image. The palette is where you make color changes and add layers. Layers are discussed in the next section.
**Figure 2-1:** Simply open a blank image in Photoshop, and you’re ready to make changes.
Staying organized
Photoshop can easily become overwhelmed by all the things that can be done to an image. You can lose yourself for hours, even days, getting new ideas and new ways to use all the features.
It’s easy to let the sheer number of features in Photoshop’s Organizer distract you. However, using the Organizer makes it easy to organize and categorize your projects into folders.
The Organizer window opens by default when you open Photoshop. Open the Organizer

Q:
ValueError: Zero-size array to be interpreted as None
I wanted to count number of tokens in a string and print it in another string.
But it gives a ValueError: Zero-size array to be interpreted as None.
I have already provided the sentences as input to the program.
In str.translate(), last argument which is the target string, is not provided but rather I was trying to count total of number of tokens in the string.
import re
sentence = [“One sunny day”, “Today is a cloudy day”, “I have an apple”, “I like it”, “I have an apple and I love it”, “One sunny day”, “Today is a cloudy day”]
def main():
total = 0
#print(sentence)
#trans = “”
#for i in range(len(sentence)):
# if “is a” in sentence[i]:
# trans = sentence[i].translate(None)
# sentence[i] = “”
# total = total+1
# i = i+1
# #print(i)
# print(“I have”, total, “tokens.” + str(trans))
# #print(i)
#print(“I am going to eat”, i)
main()
A:
Not sure, but you need to add the minus:
-1
You do not want to count all tokens of “is a” if “is a” is not in the string. So you are just adding 1. This is why you get the value error.
You need to count tokens which are not in the target string. -1 does that.
BTW: You could do it much easier like this:
import re
sentence = [“One sunny day”, “Today is a cloudy day”, “I have an apple”, “I like it”, “I have an apple and I love it”, “One sunny
Q:
PHP to C# Code Encryption / Decryption
Does anybody know of a C# function that would perform the equivalent of the PHP function encryption_decryption( $key, $plaintext, $mode, $iteration_count )?
A:
Have a look at the DotNetOpenAuth library (a C# port of the open source.NET libraries for OpenID), specifically, DotNetOpenAuth.CodeMakers.DotNet.Cryptography. I think it should be straightforward to use the code from there to write your own DotNetOpenAuth.CodeMakers.DotNet.Cryptography.Functions class.
Also, many web sites have samples that show how to perform basic encryption/decryption. Check out Phil Haack’s post on Encrypting and Decrypting in.NET.
