Creating a new document
Before you start any editing, you need a place to work. To do this, choose File⇒New, or press Ctrl+N (⌘-N). Photoshop prompts you for the size of the new document and the orientation, which you’re given the option of creating portrait or landscape. You can choose between left- or right-side portrait or left- or right-side landscape.
By default, the toolbars at the top of the screen are hidden. To see them, choose View⇒Toolbars (View Menu⇒Toolbars). After you resize and position the new image, you can hide the toolbars by choosing View⇒Hide/Show Toolbars.
To add a new layer, choose Layer⇒New, or press Ctrl+N (⌘-N) with the Layer icon selected.
To select an area of an image for editing, choose Select⇒Select. Then choose your desired tool (pencil, pen, or lasso) and click. This feature enables you to select an area of the image as you design a document.
