Displacement transducers, in which a proof mass is made to oscillate in two directions by electromagnetic or piezoelectric forces, have been known in the prior art for some time. Examples include U.S. Pat. No. 2,596,914 to Carney et al., U.S. Pat. No. 2,995,228 to Freeman, and U.S. Pat. No. 3,937,011 to Ukegami. The device disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 3,937,011 to Ukegami consists of a member having the shape of a cantilever, the free end of which supports a proof mass. As the proof mass is displaced by an external actuator, a load on the cantilever and the proof mass is applied in the direction of the displacement which results in deflection of the cantilever in a direction perpendicular to the direction of the displacement. This deflection is measured using an interferometer or other transducer. Another mode of operation is shown in U.S. Pat. No. 4,173,313 to Freeman. In this device a ring of magnets is mounted in a cantilever about which a proof mass is mounted. The magnets are displaced in order to give rise to a magnetic field around the proof mass and couple with the proof mass via the eddy currents set up by the magnets. Here also the deflection of the cantilever and proof mass results in a change in the magnetic field, causing a change in the mutual inductance coupling of the magnets and the proof mass. This change is transmitted to the magnets, causing a corresponding change in their positional relationship, which in turn induces a change in the magnetic field. In this way the proof mass position is detected. While such prior art devices have proven to be quite accurate, they do suffer from a number of disadvantages. One problem is that the magnets are subject to magnetic hysteresis. This means that a magnet will attract or repel to a greater or lesser extent when it is magnetized one way or the other and when it is magnetized in the same direction it will tend to retain that magnetization. This makes the devices less than ideal for use in high ambient temperature environments, particularly where the ambient temperature is quite high. First line pharmacotherapy for ulcerative colitis. The therapeutic goal of treatment in ulcerative colitis is to induce and maintain remission and to prevent colectomy. The treatment options are restricted and toxic effects are common. The medical treatment of choice for mild-to-moderate active ulcerative colitis should be based on its safety profile and ability to induce and maintain remission. Topical, oral and biologic therapies are reviewed. In mild-to-moderate ulcerative colitis, mesalamine is the drug of choice. Oral 5-ASA preparations are active in mild, moderate and severe disease. Mesalamine is less effective in severe cases. Systemic corticosteroids are effective only in mild active disease. However, in severe cases, pre-treatment with high doses of mesalamine can induce remission. The combination of oral 5-ASA and mesalamine is also effective in mild-to-moderate active UC. No drug has yet shown superior efficacy over other drugs in inducing remission or altering the course of the disease. Adverse effects are a dose-limiting factor with 5-ASA preparations and mesalamine. Corticosteroids are associated with significant adverse effects and do not alter the course of the disease. Mesalamine at high doses appears to act as a biological drug, but the evidence is insufficient to recommend its use. The therapeutic options in patients with severe active UC are limited. TNF-alpha inhibitors are effective in moderate to severe disease.
