The following steps provide an easy way to open Photoshop and quickly start working with some of its features to create a photomontage. (See Using Photoshop’s Quick Tips feature for more help.)
1. Open Photoshop. To open Photoshop, you can click to start the program, or you can use a shortcut key or choice from the menu bar. (If you’re not sure what the menu bar is, refer to Figure 1-1 and Figure 1-3.) If you start with a new file, a window called Photoshop.xcf appears where your work will be saved.
2. To open an existing file, choose File⇒Open and navigate to the location where the file is stored.
If you’re using a document from a plug-in, you can open it from the Tools panel.
3. View a sample of the image on your monitor. Even if you can’t see any problem areas with your images or the image you’re trying to modify, the interface can be intimidating at first if you’re not used to it. Therefore, work with it in a mode that makes your life easier — such as nondestructive editing.
4. Choose Edit⇒Preferences⇒Performance. The Performance Preferences dialog box opens (refer to Figure 1-1 and Figure 1-3).
Your choices in this dialog box are already set for you. The first option on the Performance tab is Save For Web and Devices, which is recommended unless you need to save for web. Turn this off if you plan to use the image for printing. If you’re a print designer, turn this on, and if you work in the web, turn this off.
The second option is Transparency. If you’re using transparency, you may be able to use the separate Layers window for editing the image.
If you have options set in the Performance preferences, Photoshop may remind you of them. If so, click OK to close the Performance Preferences dialog box. If you have not set any performance preferences, the dialog box opens with the Default options shown here.
5. Choose File⇒Open. The Open dialog box opens.
6. Choose a location for your file and then click Open. Figure 1-4 shows the Open dialog box with a file selected and ready for use.
