Such video encoding works by dividing each video frame into blocks, for example, 16.times.16 blocks, of pixels. The data for each pixel in each block are quantized using a compression technique such as DCT (discrete cosine transform) to generate a block of information. This quantization step of the coding technique uses a quantization matrix to weight the different frequencies to produce a compressed image.
As the compression ratio is increased, aliasing becomes more evident in the resulting image. Aliasing is an undesirable effect in that it creates jagged image edge-like features in the resulting picture. As the block size increases, the number of aliased edges increases. An edge is aliased when a pixel is from a group of repeated pixels, such as a line of a checkerboard pattern, rather than the pixel itself. This is because each pixel is from the same group of pixels.
As stated above, each pixel in a compressed image is quantized using a compression technique such as DCT. The compression technique weights the different frequencies to produce a compressed image. Quantization is a process that weights the different frequencies to produce a quantized value. This process can produce quantization noise.
A problem occurs when aliased edges are closely located. This close location is the result of the aliased edge being located in a compressed image. In this example, the problem is that the edge of the “blue” checkerboard is next to the edge of the “green” checkerboard. The aliased edge is part of the compressed image, or in other words, is a part of the pixel of the video signal that encodes to the quantization values.
