The AutoCAD software includes a host of modeling tools that work with different media, such as surfaces, blocks, views, graphics, and layouts. In addition to the construction tools, AutoCAD provides a 2D design environment, which includes tools to create drawings, such as drafting, models, and presentations. Some of the design tools are integrated in the software, whereas others are available as templates or extensions in the Autodesk portfolio. With the latter, the user can download the setup package for the extension and then install it in the software’s preferences window. The AutoCAD software is available for a wide range of operating systems, including macOS, Linux, and Windows.

The AutoCAD software’s functionality can be divided into several main modules, which interact using a graphical interface and are accessible through the main menu bar.

The first user interface is the Drawing and Visualization (DV) module, which contains a host of modeling tools, such as geometry, dimensions, 3D views, and block libraries, as well as tools to create editing and annotation layers, and to convert graphics into AutoCAD drawings. Some of the editing and annotation layers are predefined and can be used as new features in the models.

The DXF (a term that stands for Desktop Exchange Format) module represents a file format to store the drawings created in the DV module. There are four types of DXF files, namely DWG, DGN, DGS, and DFX. They are in many cases proprietary files that are only compatible with the corresponding AutoCAD version. In addition to DXF, the DWG, DGN, and DGS files can be converted into DWF. The DWF files, however, can be opened and saved in both PDF and DWF formats. The DXF module also includes a special tool to open the DXF file with a different program that is compatible with the selected DXF type. The DXF files are suitable for sharing among different design software applications.

The Structure (STG) module contains a library of different construction tools, such as walls, roofs, frames, windows, doors, and columns. The API (application programming interface) for AutoLISP for AutoCAD was introduced in AutoLISP version 2.0. The original AutoLISP and Visual LISP applications continued to be available, but as of AutoLISP version 2.1 AutoLISP applications were deprecated.

AutoCAD 2000 introduced Xref (cross-reference) editing, which allows the specification of a 3D path that can be used as a guide for 2D objects. Xref editing was later enhanced in AutoCAD to support 2D and 3D objects.

Design functions

Parametric design
AutoCAD lets you build 3D models that can be edited as ordinary 2D objects and can use the same dimensioning and editing tools as 2D objects. These models are described using parametric drawing. Parametric drawing is a special type of drawing where some dimensions are allowed to be variable. For example, the length of a dimension can be varied along a line, or the radius of a circular section can be made to vary along a circular arc.

Colors can be used to create any or all of a drawing’s objects, by using color in a special way. When a line is added between two points, the line is colored between those two points, and you can move the line to a new position and the color will move with the line.

Where AutoCAD is limited in how it handles colors, it is also less vulnerable to accidentally overloading the software’s memory resources with colors. For example, a line that has an enormous number of colors might choke the software.

Go to Settings > Preferences >
Export Settings.
Locate the Autocad export folder.
Go to the Data > Data Management subfolder.
Copy the configuration file for Autocad and paste it in
the Autodesk subfolder.

Select the Autodesk subfolder and click on the Load button.

Importing.dsdx file
Connect to a Windows computer and transfer the.dsdx file to the computer.

Open Autocad and select “Edit > Preferences > Export Settings”.

Locate the Autocad export folder.
Open the Export settings file located in the Autocad export folder.

Enter the.dsdx file into the “Import Settings” window.

Save the settings to the Export settings file and close.

Importing.dat file
Connect to a Windows computer and transfer the.dat file to the computer.
