With a good sound system in a quiet room, a small but decent-quality microphone, and a strong monitor, you can use Photoshop for long periods of time without having to relocate to a different place.
Understanding the Photoshop Layers: An Introduction
Photoshop is a powerful program, but its luscious design (with its plethora of features, tools, and options) is the source of many headaches and confusion for beginners. Those who have used Photoshop for a long time may be tempted to give in to its power and continue operating purely in the media-flow view, trusting that they’ll be able to find their way around the program. For example, you may have drilled yourself into the muscle memory of using a few key tools over a dozen times a day, and not even realize it. But if you want to master Photoshop, you have to move past the flow-oriented view and learn how to think in layers.
After you become familiar with the Layers panel, you’ll find your image-editing tasks much easier. The many tools that Photoshop offers enable you to quickly fix mistakes, apply special effects, and make creative composites. Layers are a key concept in Photoshop that enables you to save the work you’ve done. To demonstrate the important concepts that go beyond the standard media flow, follow along with the steps in this section.
The best way to become familiar with Photoshop’s layers is to create a new file with some basic shapes, squares and circles.
Step 1: Start a New File
You start a new Photoshop document by clicking the New Document icon on the workspace (refer to Figure 2-1) or by pressing Ctrl+N (Windows) or Command+N (Mac). Type a name for the new file in the Create a New Document window that appears, or simply choose a name from the drop-down list.
**Figure 2-1:** At the top of the Workspace is a New Document icon.
Step 2: Import Your Image
After creating a new document in Photoshop, the first step to working with any image is to import the image file. To import your image, click the Open dialog, navigate to the folder that contains the file you want to open, and then click the file. The picture of the monster bag I used as the subject of this book, for example, appears in Figure 2-2.

Step
There are a few things to remember when using Photoshop Elements 12 and 13. We’ve gone through them for you here.
1. How to find the Tools menu
The default menu in Photoshop Elements for navigating around the program is the main menu that looks like this:
You can always change the order of the menus, and can even arrange them into a split screen view. This screenshot shows the Photoshop Elements program organised as a split screen:
2. Workflow for rotating a rectangle
You can do a lot of rotations in Photoshop Elements. It’s very straightforward. Let’s look at how to rotate a rectangle.
Open a new document (File>New). Choose Edit>Transform>Rotate (Ctrl+T).
You can see that you have an option to choose an angle and an axis, or you can choose the center point for the rotation:
You can also use the various shortcut keys that appear when you hover over the icons. They are Ctrl+0 to choose the center point, Ctrl+X to choose the horizontal axis and Ctrl+Y to choose the vertical axis.
The simplest way to rotate a rectangle, however, is to move the rectangle to the new axis.
3. How to make a text and an image the same size
In most cases, the text on a web page should be about the same size as the images. The same applies to Instagram, when it comes to posting images.
The easiest way to do this is to resize both the text and the image to the same size. Select the text and choose Text>Font. Choose your font size and change the direction to Horizontal. You can also choose to add textboxes around the text. To change the size to the same as the image, you can use the Image>Canvas Size icon.
The two images are now the same size. The same works for any type of image.
4. How to change colours of a photo
There are various ways to change the colours in Photoshop Elements.
View>Adjustments>Levels (Ctrl+M) You can either pick a single colour and adjust it, or use the sliders to change them all at once.
To change colours, you can use the above tool, but now, you can also use the Eyedropper tool (F on the Mac). Simply click on a colour in the image and then

Ask HN: What HTML5 Web Framework Do You Use? – sdesol
It looks like all major browsers have adopted the same HTML5 standard. I've heard people talk about Angular, Knockout and React for a while and they even have an LESS framework. From experience with all of these frameworks, I feel like I could get the job done and learn some things in the process. After reading the HTML5 spec and playing with all the frameworks mentioned above, I'm just not sure which one to start with. I know Angular is built on top of the DOM and Knockout is
The Department of Justice has concluded its investigation into New York City Police Department (NYPD) officers’ involvement in secret surveillance operations in Muslim communities, determining that no NYPD officials broke any laws.
Preet Bharara, the US attorney for the Southern District of New York, wrote in a letter to United States House of Representatives Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings on Friday that the internal investigation, which began in May 2014, “did not locate any evidence” that NYPD employees broke the law.
The report did not delve into whether officers had broken FBI policies in their surveillance operations, which have come under scrutiny after the secret review was revealed by the Associated Press last month.
The NYPD’s street-level intelligence officers “were engaged in a lawful investigative activity which may have incidentally resulted in the surveillance of lawful law-abiding individuals,” Mr Bharara wrote.
“As it was, the investigation resulted in no criminal indictments or arrests, and no administrative or civil sanctions were imposed,” Mr Bharara wrote. “Although the investigation revealed instances of improprieties in the course of the NYPD’s investigation into the activities of certain individuals, and the NYPD’s disclosure of those matters to the FBI, the investigation did not identify any specific improprieties by NYPD officers of their own accord, or that resulted in any NYPD officer’s unauthorized disclosure of any criminal conduct to any person or entity.”
An NYPD spokesman said: “The Office of the Deputy Commissioner of Legal Matters determined that as a result of a thorough investigation they did not find any evidence to support criminal charges.”
Earlier this year, the Associated Press reported the NYPD’s deployment of a “secretive surveillance unit”, which often spied on not only Muslim-American communities but political groups including Occupy Wall Street.
Officers from the unit wore equipment, including cameras, to follow, photograph and videotape people. Sometimes they used a piercings locator to find a person’s “electronic notch”, marking him or her as a Muslim, and documented that. At other times, the unit participated in “spike strips”, using a microwave detonator to set off a stun gun, blinding and temporarily disabling anyone in the vicinity.
Police officials have since pushed back against the surveillance operation, with Commissioner Bill Bratton telling Mr Bharara that the NYPD would “
